THE SUNLIGHT ZONE
Photography: Miltiadis Gikas
(June 8th, World Oceans Day)
The endless movement of the sea has always inspired artists, poets and writers. Its depths are dark, quiet, mysterious but also surreal, blue and turquoise: This is the “Sunlight Zone”.
This uppermost level, also known as the epipelagic zone (photic zone, euphotic zone) receives the most light and is home to numerous marine animals. For many of us encounters with marine life are rare. Discovering the world below the surface of the sea can be a unique and powerful experience, a new world.
Miltiadis Gikas has had many encounters in this underwater world; his passion and love of the sea is expressed through his love of free-diving and photography. Free-diving has offered him unique meetings with many magnificent creatures.
Here are some of Miltiadis’ distinct moments in the sunlight zone of the Aegean.
