INTRODUCTION TO ANCIENT GREEK TRAGEDY
"HOW TO INTERPRET THE ANCIENTS"
Theatre Workshop
With Nikos Dionysios
Fivi Fildissi, Improvisation
July 1 – July 29, 2024
At the Association of Spata-Artemida, Vravrona
The topic of interpreting Ancient Greek Tragedy remains contemporary and relevant in the world of theater but why? What do the ancient plays have that excites directors and artists and leads them to discover new ways of interpreting an ancient theatrical work?
This workshop will focus on the tragedies, a historical journey, focusing especially on the 5th century BC. We will explore the various perspectives and interpretations of selected works and poets.
5th century BC and the golden age of theater in ancient Athens begins. What was happening during that period? Were there events that strongly influenced the life and everyday life of the Athenian citizen? How did political and social situations influence the theater? How were the great tragic poets, representatives of the Attic theater and tragedy in general, inspired? What did they write about and what did Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, Aristophanes and Menander represent for Athenian society?
What was the structure of the theater? How was a performance built? What was the social power of the theater and what impact did it have on the societies of the time? What is its relationship with Democracy?
In parallel with the history of theatre, the workshop will introduce the participants to the importance of the Chorus. Stage practice, set and costume, music, improvisation, kinesiology, vocal work and acting will be explored.
Choral excerpts from various tragedies will be selected, representative of the 3 great poets such as:
ORESTEA
OEDIPUS TYRANNOS
MEDEIA
The workshop is designed for all those interested in exploring the topic of Ancient Greek Tragedy.
Eastern Attica and particularly Artemida (Loutsa) is a historical area but is quite underdeveloped culturally and educationally. We believe there is a need for various cultural activities to inspire the general public and youth.
The workshop will be completed in 9 sessions.
The last session will include a performance and presentation of the work open to the public.
